In 2003, the Board of Directors for Pilgrims Hospice Society chose to honour Dr. Helen Hays and her contribution to the development of hospice and palliative care in Canada by re-naming its annual friend-raiser luncheon.
The yearly event highlights an aspect of Hospice and recognizes Dr. Hays’ work to advance end-of-life care.
Though the luncheon is intended to introduce community leaders to the work of Pilgrims Hospice, it is also a successful fundraiser. With more than 220 people in attendance its first year, the event raised $17,500 for caregiving programs operated by the Society. Each year, it has continued to sell out the Empire Ballroom at the Fairmont Macdonald Hotel with guest speakers including: Judy Schultz's presentation about the healing powers of food, David Staples' recount of Barb Tarbox's death and its impact on her children, as well as Dr. Jane Simington's inspirational presentation on spiritual wellness. The Sunflower Luncheon is held each September.
Next year's luncheon will take place on Friday, September 17, 2010, please stay tuned for more information.
